Reinhard Sandner (born in 1951 in Bockwitz (heute: Lauchhammer), GDR) is a painter and graphic artist. After training as an electrician and working in various roles—including as a plant electrician and cemetery gardener in Dresden—he took drawing and painting classes and subsequently studied painting and graphic design in Dresden under Gerhard Kettner and S. Klotz. Since the late 1970s, he has worked as a freelance artist in Dresden and Lauchhammer. Sandner is a co-founder of the sound-and-image group SARDH. In addition to graphic portfolios, film works, and public art projects, he has been involved in the production of numerous artist’s books.

Sandner has held solo exhibitions at venues including the Leonhardi Museum in Dresden, Eigen Art in Leipzig, the orbis pictus Gallery in Berlin, the Dresden Administrative Court, and the F60 Visitor Mine in Lichterfeld. In addition, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden, and the Hygiene Museum in Dresden, as well as in international presentations in France and Switzerland. Since the late 1970s, his exhibition activities have spanned museums, galleries, and public spaces, with a clear focus on Saxony and Lusatia.

Reinhard Sandner, a native of Lauchhammer, has devoted himself for decades to the Lusatian landscape and its people. Through painting, assemblages, and sculptural works, he has developed a distinctive visual language that established him as an unmistakable figure in the Dresden art scene of the 1980s. As part of the Lausitz Biennale, Sandner is exhibiting the works Verlassene Werkstatt (1994), Was los im Revier (2003), and the assemblage Steigender Pegel (1989/2002), a sculptural installation made of rusty iron and bricks. His works provide a striking contrast to the traditional exhibition of cast iron art and open up new perspectives on the industrial history of Lusatia.
