Platform for Creative Participation

about the section open spaces

"Open Spaces" was created as a participatory format for artists and cultural actors, associations, initiatives, and nonprofit organizations to actively participate in the openart Lausitz Biennale. The shared goal is to highlight the diversity of Lusatia and strengthen regional art and cultural spaces. It showcases volunteer and professional engagement in the cultural sector and underscores the significant contribution this makes to the region’s quality of life.

This is a platform where creative spaces and studios can showcase themselves, and where even partially vacant buildings can be brought to life with event ideas. Exhibitions and live events held in charming venues, rural barns, and colorful meadows offer a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural diversity. We look forward to receiving numerous submissions of inspiring ideas, which were submitted in response to a call for proposals by the end of January 2026. With significant input from Cornelia Huth and Maximilian Grafe of the “People Create Culture” program run by the Lusatian Citizens’ Region under the auspices of Lausitzer Perspektiven e. V., a regionally based jury was formed, consisting of:

Marion Stensel – Former head of the Sorbian editorial department at rbb/Studio Cottbus; now retired, she volunteers with the village association and initiates cultural projects

Lisa Zacher – Board member of K3 Kulturfreunde Finsterwalde e. V.

Queenie Nopper – Coordinator at the GLEIS 3 Cultural Center in Lübbenau; neighborhood manager for the LÜBBENAUBRÜCKE project

Johanna Huthmacher – Art historian and curator at the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art (BLMK), lives in the Unterspreewald

Marian Joel Küster – Artist from Cottbus

At the jury meeting on February 27, 2026, over 30 ideas were selected to be presented as part of “Open Spaces – Offene Räume.”
