Locations
about the district
The openart Lausitz program kicks off at three locations: Werenzhain, Doberlug-Kirchhain, and Rückersdorf.
In the agricultural linear village of Werenzhain lies what is now the Atelierhof, once a large tavern with a ballroom, barns, and stables. Today, the site offers a variety of exhibition spaces and a weekend café. Werenzhain is a district of the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain.
Two very different towns, Doberlug and Kirchhain, were merged during the GDR’s 1950 administrative reform:
Kirchhain, known as the “tanners’ town”—in 1912, there were 76 tanneries in the town—and Doberlug, home to a monastery founded by Cistercians and an imposing castle.
A few kilometers away lay the lignite mining areas; at the beginning of the 20th century, a group of lakes formed there. The Rückersdorf swimming lake, however, was created by gravel extraction. The water quality is excellent, and the gentle slope into the water makes it ideal for children.
