Background
A new biennial format for contemporary art in rural areas has emerged under the motto “Kunst formt Räume—art shapes spaces.“ Deliberate allusions to architecture create an artistic and critical balance of structural change in the Lusatia region of Brandenburg.
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the two German states occurred 35 years ago. During this period, farms, factories, and other operational facilities were closed, and nearby homes sat vacant, gradually falling into disrepair. After the fall, a new generation of East and West German artists began redefining improvisation in open spaces and on unused land. With their diverse cultural backgrounds, creative individuals worldwide also contributed to developing these techniques and inventing new forms of expression. Eventually, these temporary spaces were no longer viewed as quick fixes but as a fundamental principle that fostered the growth of transformative ways of being. An essential part of the artistic identity involved the daily process of creating and designing new spaces. This evolution led to the development of the "technology of improvisation" as a key artistic practice in the 21st century.
The exhibition venues are located throughout a lively area around Lusatia, including these sites:
- Atelierhof Werenzhain, Am Markt 1, Am Markt 20 and Rückersdorfer See in Doberlug-Kirchhain (Elbe-Elster)
- Biotürme and Kunstgussmuseum in Lauchhammer, Heinrich-Zille-Straße 1, Lauchhammer (Oberspreewald-Lausitz)
- Jamlitz/Lieberose (Dahme-Spreewald)
- Museum for Textile and Industrial History Lusatia (Spree-Neiße)
- Kunsthalle Lausitz at the former Großenhain railway station site (Cottbus)
The involvement of local initiatives and organizations further highlights Lusatia's cultural diversity. The participating locations naturally form a vibrant ribbon that spans the entire Brandenburg Lausitz region. The program is also enhanced with live events, workshops, and participation activities.
Open Spaces
Thanks to this unique format, the program now includes independently operated art venues in the area. Besides opening their offices and studios, they can share ideas and host live events and exhibitions in scenic spots like colorful meadows and rustic barns.
Young Art
The ‘Young Art’ section is aimed at people aged 12 to 21 who are interested in contemporary art forms. The program offers insights into creating and displaying art—including hands-on workshops, direct interactions with artists and curators, and visits to the Biennale venues, studios, and national museums.
