Her artistic practice focuses on expressive, abstract painting. She also creates smaller works on paper and ceramic objects. In her creative process, she consistently employs a collage technique, working with glazes and layers, assembling all the components and then partially dismantling them. By combining different layers, highlighting fractures, and using transparent surfaces, she makes the past and what lies beneath visible, and attempts to engage with the complexity of life in order to give form to the contradictions and the increasing difficulty of evaluating and categorizing reality. 
 
Work Title: Zerbrechliche Formen

Birgit Fechner combines sculptural works and expressive painting into a sensuous and poetic installation as a whole. From reused everyday ceramics and kitsch figurines, she creates abstract forms evoking plant shapes, ancient stelae, and Dadaist object art. The sculptures are complemented by vividly colored paintings composed of gestural swaths of color and rhythmic layering.

At the Eisenkunstguss Museum in Lauchhammer, sculpture and painting enter into a lively dialogue with the museum’s historical art cast exhibits. Balancing fragility, humor, and expressiveness, the result is a site-specific intervention that offers a new way to experience the museum’s classical works.
