The Lauchhammer Ironworks was founded in 1725 by a woman named Benedicta Margaretha von Löwendal. Under Detlev Graf von Einsiedel, it developed into a major art and bronze foundry. Lauchhammer is considered the birthplace of artistic iron casting in Germany and the first production site for large-scale cast-iron sculptures.

Today, the Lauchhammer Museum of Artistic Iron Casting houses a collection that is unique in Germany, comprising some 2,800 historical models made of plaster and metal. The reliefs and three-dimensional models document the artistic and cultural history of iron and bronze casting from the 18th through the 21st century. This extensive historical collection is complemented by original iron and bronze castings, including sculptures, monuments, and decorative art objects by prominent contemporary artists.
