Johannes Weilandt (born 1991) lives and works as a visual artist in Berlin. He studied fine art and stage and costume design at the Weißensee Academy of Art in Berlin and at the University of Arts in Belgrade, and was awarded the title of “Meisterschüler” in 2022.
In his video works and series of drawings, he explores the continuities of social oppression and experiences of upheaval within the historical context of formerly divided Germany. Weilandt’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and were honored with the Young Art Award Berlin (2023). This year, he is a scholarship recipient of the Stiftung Kunstfonds (2026). Together with director and performer Karoline Stegemann, he founded the group OST format in 2024 to support and initiate documentary-artistic projects dealing with themes of East German and Eastern European identity and history.
Work Title: Letzte Kumpel
In the video work Letzte Kumpel (2025) (german for "Last Miners"), four former miners from the Mansfeld region in Saxony-Anhalt talk about their working lives and the disappearance of their industry. Over 800 years of mining shaped the landscape and the people of the Mansfeld mining district. When the mines closed in the early 1990s, a void emerged in the region’s sense of identity that has yet to be filled.
