In the participatory performance ‘stimmen – głose – threads’, language is made visible and tangible in an unusual way. Inspired by the multilingualism of Lusatia, the artist Karen Modrei explores the tension between understanding and not understanding, familiarity and otherness – and translates spoken language into textile material.
A modified domestic knitting machine serves as the translation tool: using a sound sensor, it picks up voices and sounds and transforms them in real time into patterns in the knitwork. During the performance, a textile document is thus created from the voices and languages of the visitors, which will subsequently form part of the exhibition.
On 22 August, you are invited to become part of this translation process yourself: tell a story, read aloud from a book, bring along your own text – or simply speak spontaneously.
Participation is free of charge, no registration needed and open to all ages. You are welcome to bring your own texts, books and stories. You can also join in spontaneously. As only one voice can be ‘knitted’ at a time, we ask for your patience if there is a wait.
