From the 19th century onwards, Forst (Lusatia) developed into one of Germany’s most important textile towns. Hundreds of cloth mills shaped the townscape and made the town a centre of the European textile industry. Today, only a few remnants of this era remain.
Today’s Forster. Museum of Textile and Industrial History in Lusatia is housed in a listed factory complex dating from 1896–97. Originally founded by the Noack family, the cloth factory changed hands in 1935 following bankruptcy and, after nationalisation, became part of the VEB Forster Tuchfabriken. Following the end of production in 1992 and a brief period of disuse, the building was converted into a museum: the Brandenburg Textile Museum opened here in 1995. After extensive renovation and a redesign, it reopened in 2025 as the Forster. Museum of Textile and Industrial History of Lusatia.
In the exhibition hall, which covers around 300 square metres, works by international and regional artists will be brought together for the first time as part of the 1st openart Lausitz Biennale in 2026.
