Forst (Lusatia) was one of the leading East German textile cities until 1989. Alongside the energy sector, the textile industry was the most important branch of industry in all of Lower Lusatia and had a significant impact far beyond the region. Today’s Textile Museum is located in a listed cloth factory complex dating from 1896/97. Its exhibitions focus on the history of the regional textile industry and the broader industrial history of Lusatia, particularly the lignite industry. The museum also addresses the profound losses associated with this history, from the disappearance of entire towns to the destruction of architecture, landscapes, and identities. Environmental damage from the past is just as much a part of the new museum concept as the positive processes of transformation that Lusatia is undergoing today.

For reasons of monument protection, it is not allowed to attach fixtures to the walls. However, it is possible to suspend objects from the wooden roof beams, place light installations in front of the windows, or position sculptures within the space.
Please note: a freight elevator is available for use.
