The former Lehn-Schank-Gut Werenzhain has been owned by the Atelierhof Werenzhain e.V. association since 1996 and has been developed as a place for creative work. In addition to the renovated main house with ballroom and the former village tavern with dance hall, the estate also includes numerous outbuildings that have not yet been restored. These comprise stables, barns, as well as a servants’ house and a bakehouse.

The complex is located on the village square, right next to the village church, and stands as a positive example of the successful reactivation of a farm in Lusatia that had almost become a “lost place” after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As part of the Lausitz Biennale, all buildings on the site can be used, including the galleries, the hall, the courtyard, and the surrounding meadows.

The townhouse was built at the end of the 19th century and received an impressive staircase extension in the 1930s. From that time on, the property was used as a party headquarters and became commonly known as “The Brown House. During the oft he German Democratic Republic, the building continued to serve as the party’s headquarters and was also run as a cultural center under the name “Club der Werktätigen” (Club of the Working People). Therefore, it became known in everyday speech as “The Red House. Later, the building served as the city of Doberlug-Kirchhain’s central passport and registration office.
