The buildings constructed during Lauchhammer’s heyday in the 1950s and early 1960s have lost their original function. Before their complete renovation, one of the apartment blocks is being made available for artists to share their experiences and ideas about the ongoing transformation of Lusatia, as well as their visions and aspirations for its future. Artists will have access to three three-room apartments (around 60 m² each), a commercial unit for the final presentation of the works developed on site, and four atmospheric vaulted cellars.
Exhibition dates: Friday, 7 August 2026 – Sunday, 23 August 2026

The 22-metre-high brick towers were built as part of a plant for the biological purification of coking plant wastewater. With the commissioning of the world's first large-scale coking plant for high-temperature coke from lignite in 1952, the GDR gave an important boost to its iron and steel industry. After being decommissioned in 1991, the towers underwent extensive renovation until 2010 as part of the IBA Fürst-Pückler-Land project under the motto ‘Castel del Monte of Lusatia’. This preserved them as the only architectural evidence of the former GDR's prosperous coke production. Until last year, they were open to visitors as observation towers with glass platforms.
